With the economy in the doldrums, and unemployment reaching highs not seen in decades, people are hurting all over the country. With reduced incomes comes the necessity to cut back and get by with less, to reduce, re-use and recycle the things we have.

While getting by with less is great, you don’t have to completely do away with everything. There are many simple ways to reduce your spending, and save money every month.

Today we’ve put together a nice long list of easy ways to save money every month on recurring expenses, on money leaks and on just about everything else. So let’s get started.

Record your expenses.

The first step to saving money is to figure out how much you spend. Keep track of all your expenses—that means every coffee, newspaper and snack you buy. Ideally, you can account for every penny.

Once you have your data, organize the numbers by categories, such as gas, groceries and mortgage, and total each amount. Consider using your credit card or bank statements to help you with this. If you bank online, you may be able to filter your statements to easily break down your spending.

Budget.

It’s hard to tell where you’re headed if you haven’t mapped out where you are! The word ‘budget’ gets a bad rap — but it’s not about depriving yourself or taking things away — it’s about adding freedom to your life.

When you take control of your spending and saving, you give yourself the freedom to make certain choices when you want to make them.

Bottom line: budgeting isn’t as scary or as difficult as it sounds — it’s just about making sure your money goes where you want it to go.

Save On Recurring Expenses.

One place people should be looking to save money are on the big recurring expenses that we all have every month. Let’s look at a few places you can save.

• Cell phone bill: JD Powers reports that the average annual wireless phone bill is $1,152, or about $96 a month. Why pay that much when you can get a great smartphone via a pre-paid wireless provider for hundreds less every year.

• Home phone: Some people will cancel their home phone service altogether in favor of either cell phone service only, resulting in savings of hundreds per year. Of course if you still need a phone you can go with internet telephone service instead, which often costs much less.

If you need to have a land-line for a home security system or something along those lines, consider canceling extra options on your phone like voicemail, call waiting and caller id to save on things you don’t need or use.

• Internet service: Try switching your internet service to another provider in order to take advantage of new subscriber deals or promotions.

Switch from one internet type to another – DSL to cable or fiber-optic internet. Switching can often get you great initial deals, and then you can hop providers to get another great deal when the promotion ends. Also consider bundling your services like phone, internet and TV to save.

• TV and entertainment: there are a variety of ways to save on your TV and entertainment costs. First, you can switch cable providers from one to the other to get in on a promotional offer.

If that doesn’t work you can always cut the cord altogether, and save a ton by setting up a home entertainment system using streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and other free content providers.

• Gym membership: Have you heard the one about the guy who in 1997, joined a pay-as-you-go gym and never went? Over those 14 years, it’s cost absolutely nothing. Yet plenty of people are happy to shell out £40 or £50 a month by direct debit to a gym they never go to. £50 a month for 14 years is £8,400 and that doesn’t include the crisps you have to buy from the vending machine after each visit.

If you use the gym three times a week, great. If not, cancel your membership immediately. You’ll soon save enough to buy your own bike and, if you’re so inclined, a rowing machine. And if you can still afford it, a crisps vending machine. Consider running home from work three times a week. It’s free.

Clear your credit card debt.

One of the golden rules of financial planning is to clear your most expensive debts first, in other words your credit cards. OK, credit cards offer a convenient way to pay for goods and services but if you can’t clear the balance every month, consider a low-cost loan as an alternative.

Do the sums: a credit card debt (APR 16.8%) of £2,500 over five years will cost £1,212 in interest. A loan at 7.8% will cost £527. A saving of £685.

Negotiate prices.

Did you know that you can negotiate in almost any kind of purchasing situation?

Though you might have previously thought negotiation was only for the bigger purchases such as home buying or car shopping, you can also negotiate at retail stores and online too.

You can even negotiate to lower your bills!

Slash excess spending.

Every so often, it’s a good idea to track your purchasing history to see where your money is going. An easy way to do this is by using budget apps like Mint.com or BillGuard.com.

Then, once you see where your money is going, you can make adjustments where necessary. Do you really need to buy that new iPhone or Android device ever time a new one comes out?

Make coffee at home.

Spending $4 to $5 on coffee every day definitely adds up. So and allow yourself a few days a week to buy coffee at cafés, and make it at home the rest of the time.

For heaven’s sake, quit smoking.

If you’re still a smoker, you have to know by now that your habit is not only expensive, but potentially deadly as well. If you want to add years to your life and save a boatload of money, the easiest thing to do is to stop smoking altogether.

You can quit cold turkey, try some of the many anti-smoking products that are out there, or switch to an electronic cigarette to buy some time. Whichever path you choose, you will be much better off.

Install a programmable thermostat.

Installing a programmable thermostat is a no-brainer if you want to cut down on energy usage while you’re not at home, or simply regulate the temperature in your home.

By setting it to heat or cool your home at certain times, you can ensure that your utilities aren’t being wasted while you’re at work or asleep – and save money in the process.

Buy used when you can.

You can often find the exact item you want with a bit of clever shopping at used equipment stores, used game stores, consignment shops, and so on. Just make these shops a part of your normal routine – go there first when looking for potential items and you will save money.

Clothes, for example, often cost pennies on the dollar when bought used – even if they were only worn once. By buying used most of the time, you can save a ton of cash.

Look for Free Events.

Going out doesn’t to socialize with friends doesn’t have to be costly. Many areas run free events that are open to everyone. Check notice boards and your local newspaper for things that might appeal.

Some of these events will even provide food and drink!

Trade down your car.

So, you bought an American sports utility vehicle (SUV) that nets 15 miles to the gallon on a whim. Obviously we’re all very impressed – especially by the personalised number plate and the way you can Tweet while negotiating narrow lanes outside schools.

But can you honestly justify the ongoing expense? If not, get rid of it. Then visit a car supermarket, where you can choose from thousands of cars at knock-down prices. If you’re a true money saver, consider an ex-rental model which you can pick up for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Make your own gifts instead of buying stuff from the store.

If you want to save money while also giving generously, creating your own homemade gifts is one way to accomplish both goals. You can make food mixes, candles, fresh-baked bread or cookies, soap, and all kinds of other things at home quite easily and inexpensively.

These make spectacular gifts for others because they involve your personal touch — something you can’t buy from a store — and quite often they’re consumable, meaning they don’t wind up filling someone’s closet with junk. Even better – include a personal handwritten note with the gift.

Avoid extended warranties.

Electrical goods are more reliable than ever. If your new radio won’t last three years perhaps it’s not worth buying in the first place. Think about it: how many times has your fridge broken down in the last five years?

And do you really need the hassle of claiming for repairs to a £10 toaster? The truth is, there are many ways to save money. Find the ways that work for you, and slowly start incorporating the strategies into your life.

Are you wondering how to save money on flights? This is an excellent question, and there are many different strategies you can utilize, to save yourself a bundle on your next personal getaway or business trip.

While these may take some time or involve a measure of inconvenience (like late night or early morning departure times or long layovers), the trade-off can be well-worth the effort.

If you love saving money and aren’t afraid to spend some time to do it, here are 7 tips that should help spare your wallet when booking your next flight.

Tip #1: Book In Advance.

This maxim probably doesn’t come as a surprise, as most people know that airline tickets cost more when purchased at the last minute. Yet, the best deals come when you buy well in advance, rather than just a week or two ahead of time.

The trick is figuring out the point at which you’ll save the most money, and even experts are divided on this complex issue. While the traditional wisdom is to buy as far in advance as possible, this may not be the most effective strategy.

Why? According to some authorities on the subject, airlines don’t offer any discounts on flights scheduled for more than about twelve weeks from the current date. They speculate that this is due to the airline booking system, which doesn’t include discounted inventory before this time frame.

While you can certainly find exceptions to this rule of thumb, perhaps the best tactic is to examine big data. CheapAir compiled the stats from a staggering five million ticket price searches, and concluded that 47 days prior to flying is the perfect time to buy.

Tip #2: Use Price Prediction.

With the question of when exactly to book being difficult to fully pin down, the best advice is to begin looking early and often. This should help you to score the best deal.

Yet, how will you know if it’s the right time to pull the trigger or if you should wait for a better deal to pop up? To help you decide, you can take advantage of price trend tools (like the one offered with the flight search on the Bing.com site).

This will give you more data, so you can make the most informed decision possible.

Tip #3: Use a Powerful Search Engine.

There are many search engines you can make use of today, such as Travelocity, Orbitz and Kayak. Kayak also allows you to compare its results to the other search engines automatically – saving you time and effort.

You can also configure it to look at flights three days before and after your planned travel dates. This is one of the best ways to save money on your flight, as prices can vary dramatically depending upon the day of the week.

Tip #4: Search For Flights From Nearby Airports.

Another trick that experienced shoppers often employ, is to search for flights from nearby airports as well. While it may be somewhat inconvenient to fly out of a nearby city rather than your preferred point of departure – you can save hundreds of dollars if you’re willing to be flexible.

Tip #5: Consider Flying at Off-Peak Times.

No one likes flying in the middle of the night or early in the morning, but you can use this knowledge to your advantage. Search for flights between 8pm and 7am, for the best chance of a steep discount.

In addition, the least popular days for flying are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. If you’re willing to travel contrary to the crowd and fly on these days, you can shave a substantial amount off your ticket price.

Tip #6: Fly Two Different Airlines.

You can save a pretty penny if the stars align, and you’re able to find a cheaper rate coming and going on two different airlines.

This method involves purchasing a one-way ticket there and back, but it’s possible to get the lowest price for each stage of your trip using this creative technique.

Tip #7: Travel Light (or Fly Southwest).

Checked luggage fees can quickly add up, especially if you’re traveling as a family. Consider cultivating the habit of traveling light, by only taking a carry-on with you.

Or, if your family is flying somewhere for a much-needed vacation, you could check just a single bag for the whole family to share. Finally, you may consider the added price of checking a bag, versus the cost of just buying items you need when you arrive at your destination.

If you’re absolutely set on checking luggage, then consider flying Southwest or JetBlue. These airlines don’t charge you for the first checked bag (the second bag is also free on Southwest)

This excellent perk can end up saving you a considerable amount of money. This is especially true on a family trip, as baggage fees will only compound when taking more travelers along for the ride.

The notion of enjoying all your favorite TV series and movies without paying a massive cable bill a.k.a cord cutting seemed like a tech-world fantasy just a few years ago. Thanks to technological revolution and innovation in the TV scene, this has gone from wishful thinking to a viable mainstream option.

For a long time cable television was the most reliable and affordable way of accessing quality shows and movies. With the advent and rising popularity of streaming services, there is no doubt that cable is facing stiff competition. And why not? Streaming offers you the best of two worlds: you not only save $100 monthly but also have unlimited access to numerous movies and TV series.

If you are willing to join the cord cutting movement, here are TV streaming services that are worth every penny:

1. Netflix

This widely popular streaming service has loads of content and at a very low price. Apart from full TV series seasons, this streaming service also offers numerous children programs in addition to movies both classic and the latest.

At a meager $8.99 a month you are able to access unlimited HD streaming to 2 TV sets simultaneously. The shortcoming is that you have to wait for a TV series to air completely before it’s available on Netflix. A big plus is that there are no commercials on Netflix!

2. Hulu

Unlike on Netflix where you have to wait for months before watching TV series aired on cable stations, on Hulu you are able to watch shows currently airing on ABC, NBC and even FOX. The catch is they are available a day after they air on the original broadcast network.

Apart from original content, this streaming service also has a decent back catalogue of previous seasons of networks TV shows. If you are a fan of classic TV shows such as the Brady Bunch then this is definitely a perfect fit. At only $7.99 a month you can also have access to the latest hits such as Once Upon a Time. For extra dollars a month you are able to get commercial free service.

3. Amazon Prime

This is a relatively new player in the video streaming industry. At $119 annually or $12.99 monthly, Amazon Prime offers new members a free 2-day shipping an Amazon Orders. With this streaming service, a user has unlimited access to numerous movies and TV shows.

You can stream Amazon content on multiple platforms such as Blue-ray players, SMART TVs, Kindle Fire, Tablets , Playstation and a plethora of other internet connected devices. This streaming service is currently the cheapest in the market but still has a long way to go in terms of content. If you have Amazon Prime Membership you also have access to this streaming service.

4. Sling TV

Apart from coming with a 7-day free trial, this Dish network owned streaming service is a great choice because you have access to live TV on over 30 channels such as HGTV, ESPN, and TNT.

The base package costs $20 monthly but since there no binding contract, a user is free to cancel subscription anytime they wish. It has commercials but not as much as traditional Cable Television.

5. DirectTV

Now This streaming service is the closest thing to a cable replacement. Apart from featuring over 60 channels, it is available virtually everywhere is a simple super-surfable set-up.

The cost is relatively higher at $35. It is aialble on multiple platforms including Apple TV, normal TVs, Amazon Fire and Apple Stick. With an extra $5 a month you are able to access HBO.

6. PlayStation Vue

This streaming service is a great cable substitute that comes at $39.99 a month. Apart from being able to watch programs on up to 5 screens simultaneously, you also able to access over 45 lives streaming channel.

An outstanding feature of PlayStation Vue is that the DVR feature enables fast-forwarding commercials! Popular to common misconception you don’t require PlayStation gaming console to access this streaming service.

7. YouTube TV

The notion that YouTube is just for music and cure cat videos is far from the truth. Google now offers a live streaming service on YouTube. The best thing about this service is that it offers almost every major TV channel including the most popular such as FOX, CBS, NBC and ABC.

However, this streaming service is limited geographically because it is currently available only in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago.

With these streaming services, you can watch TV without cable and at a cheaper price.

The post How to Watch TV Without Cable first appeared on Proactive Shopping.

Coupons are a great way of saving money provided you use them to buy things you need. However, it can be time-consuming to scour flyers and newspapers for them, and they will not do you any good especially if you do not take them to the store.

That is what makes coupon apps very useful. The ability to upload “clips” as well as scan coupons directly on your Android device can make the process more efficient.

Whenever you key in “coupon” on your tablet’s app, you are certain to get thousands of returns. Most apps promise to save you cash, but finding the most functional ones with useful features is a different thing. Eventually, it is worth it. Below are some of the best coupon apps that can save you money and time.

1. Ibotta

Ibotta is a free mobile coupon app that turns Android devices, iPads and iPod touch into tools for collecting cashback opportunities. With this app, users upload grocery receipts after purchasing select items as well as receive money in return.

However, when the total reaches a given threshold, the app transfers it into a venmo or PayPal account. In case you do not have any of these online payment accounts, ibotta allows you to cash out in the form of iTunes, Redbox or Starbucks.

2. Checkout 51

Just because you do not want to coupon does not mean you should miss out on savings. Besides, couponing apps operate in a similar way like the coupons themselves that is, you show them prior to purchase and get a discount.

Ideally, checkout51 operates differently. It provides cashback rebates on products you have already purchased as evidenced by the receipts. This way, you save money without taking coupons to the store. When operating the app, go to the store and shop as usual.

When at home, use the app to take pictures of the store receipt. The application then scans the receipts plus deposits cash back into the checkout account based on the current rewards and offers, like a dollar for one package of Oreos.

Once your account balance reaches $20, you’ve the option to keep savings, else way you can have a cheque sent to you.

3. Snipsnap

SnipSnap is one of my favorite coupon apps. It lets the user take pictures of printed coupon as well as flash them in the store on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. In need of a coupon that suits your fancy?

Search the snip snap, a free mobile coupon app database that holds thousands of coupons issued by renowned retailers like Target & Bed. Besides, the snip snap reminds one when an expiration date is approaching. According to Ted Mann, the SnipSnap CEO and confounder “this mobile app helps users save on average, forty dollars per week.”

The application has been raised in media outlets like Tech Crunch.

4. Retail Me Not

Retail Me Not is another free mobile coupon app for iPod touch, iPad, iPhone and Android that lets the user save where and when you want, just as the name suggests.

While making your way through your best stores at the mall, this app alerts you to the location-based deals. You will have access to wide assortment of coupons plus promo codes from food & entertainment to clothing and electronics.

5. The Coupons App

This App earns lots of praise from technology sites and users for delivering real-time coupons plus updates for restaurants, gas stations, and stores.

Free to users of iPhone, Android, iPad devices and iPod touch, the coupons App boasts a built-in barcode which allows the user to scan barcodes and search for updates on a particular product. Another feature, coupon updates makes it much easier to get deals nearby.

The App score four stars on Amazon for extensive variety of deals plus the ability to cash them in and hassle-free at multiple retailers.

6. Grocery IQ

Though it is one of the most useful Apps for building shopping lists, what makes Grocery IQ different is its power to grab coupons which match items on your shopping list swiftly.

The application derives its deals from coupons.com and downloads them to the user’s supermarket loyalty card.

This app is beneficial to people who stick to the same good in the same store although constant updates plus a wide selection of discount makes it useful at all the time.

The post Best Apps to Find Coupons first appeared on Proactive Shopping.
